Pets & Hunting Birds

Pets & Hunting Birds#

A hawk on your arm says you have money. A dog at your heel says you'd like to keep it.

A pet seller of Tharsis

Bought or tamed

The dogs, cats and hunting birds that pet sellers keep, and the rarer ones nobody sells. Anyone can buy a pet. Only an animal husband can tame one out of the wild, or teach it more than to follow.

In a fight a creature’s AC is its Defense, and it adds a fifth of its level to hit. Running a Fight has the rest.

Buying and taming#

A pet seller asks about the creature’s worth, more for a rare one, and a buyer takes it home already tame. Animal Husbandry is the only way to get one nobody sells: tame it with a focus charm against its DC, teach it to attack, defend, stay or follow, and name it to raise what it’s worth.

Common pets are in any pet seller’s pens, and rare ones are worth the trip to a breeder. Any animal on Wild Animals can be tamed too, by someone who can get close enough.

The pets#

By family, cheapest first. Worth is what a tamed one sells for, in vern.

Great cats#

Cougarmedium · regularThe cougar is a tawny, long-tailed cat of the forests of Tharsis and Esthar, and the one people mean when they say something followed them home from the woods. It ambushes from above or behind. Look big, keep facing it and don’t run.Common10DC 952181d10
Darkwood Tigermedium · regularThe darkwood tiger hunts the pine country of Tharsis and the forests of Esthar and New Saellem, a striped ghost that runs to thirty stones. It takes deer and the odd woodcutter’s ox, and it rarely uses the same trail twice. A clean pelt sells well in Tharsis, where the old families like a tiger skin in front of the hearth.Rare10DC 15521101d10
Lionmedium · regularLions hold the open grasslands of Amari and Crecia, and the males do a great deal of roaring and very little hunting. The lionesses do the killing. A tamed lion is a status animal in Dumasque, where the tribes trade them as gifts.Common10DC 16622101d10
Menusian Tigermedium · regularThe menusian tiger is the great orange-and-black cat of the Menusian jungle, and it also hunts the forests of Amari. It weighs as much as three men and kills with one bite to the neck. Villagers in its range don’t walk the forest after dark, and visitors shouldn’t either.Rare20DC 10825121d12
Nigeer Tigermedium · regularThe nigeer tiger is small for a tiger and dark, with close-set stripes, and it hunts the jungle and riverbanks of the Tropics of Nigeer and the Amari coast. It swims well and often takes its prey at the water’s edge. Fishermen there leave a share of the catch on the bank, which may or may not help.Rare20DC 18825141d10
Cheetahmedium · regularCheetahs are the fastest thing on four legs on Sedia, and they run down antelope on the Crecian prairie and the high grasslands of Amari. Out of breath after a chase, they are no threat at all. Tharsian nobles keep trained ones for coursing, and a good one costs more than the horse.Common30DC 15420121d10
Jaguarmedium · regularJaguars hunt the Menusian jungle from the ground, the branches and the water, and their bite cracks a turtle shell. They are seldom seen and often heard. The rosetted pelt sells well in Kyra.Common30DC 18419131d10
Crecian Tigermedium · regularThe crecian tiger is a lean, tawny tiger of the open prairie, and the herds of Crecia and Amari are its living. It stalks through tall grass almost on its belly. Ranchers in Crecia pay well for its pelt and better for proof it’s dead.Rare40DC 171028111d10
Kyrian Tigermedium · regularThe kyrian tiger is the biggest striped cat on Sedia, pale-coated and heavy in the shoulder, and it hunts the forests and shores of Amari and Menusia. Kyrian soldiers prize its claws as trophies. The tigers take a dim view of this.Rare60DC 161027121d10
Amari Tigermedium · regularThe amari tiger ranges farther than any other tiger, from the montane grasslands of Amari to the Crecian prairie and the Menusian coast. It is a patient ambusher and a strong swimmer. Taming one is close to impossible, and the few kept in captivity belong to people who would rather not say how they got them.Rare90DC 18825131d10
Snow Leopardmedium · regularSnow leopards hunt the crags around Mt. Tyr and the ridges of New Saellem, gray-spotted and almost invisible against the rock. Clouded Leopardmedium · regularThe clouded leopard is smaller than its cousins and climbs better than any of them, and it lives on the cliffs and canyons of Jewall and New Saellem. Its coat is patterned with big dark blotches like spilled ink. Pelt traders pay more for one than for a snow leopard because they so rarely get the chance.Rare220DC 161027121d10
