Amari#

The sigil of Amari

We healed the sick for a thousand years. Then the goddess died and we learned that a sword heals some things faster.

An elder of Kyra

Subtropical coast, volcanic mountains and desert. The Amari were peaceful healers once, prophets of Ettephemone. When she died they took up weapons for Lythantos, and the Kyrians of Amari are now trained for battle from birth.

The land#

In the midst of the subtropics of Amari lies a bastion of unyielding Kyrians and tribal lords who were born to the ancient rite of battle. Kyrians are trained from birth to wield a variety of weaponry proficiently. It is said that there is a prophecy of one who will come to mark the return of Lythantos. His return will be noted by the fall of Kyra and rebirth of the Amari. Once ago, the Amari were peaceful prophets of Ettephemone. They were said to travel and heal those in need. With the death of Ettephemone, they took up weapons and the vengeance of Lythantos.

Who lives there#

Amari keeps a prophecy: one will come to mark the return of Lythantos, and his coming will be known by the fall of Kyra and the rebirth of the Amari. Kyra is a small city between two rivers and an old one, older than the fall, and its oldest families are more powerful than its size. Few outsiders reach it and fewer stay, so the prophecy makes a lot of people nervous, and plenty of Kyrians would quite like it to stay a prophecy.

A militant prophet has recently split the tribes with his own reading of the old words, and the villages that stayed loyal to their elders were struck by soldiers from outside the province. The Kyrians remember. The Amari are still healers at heart, and they are very, very good at war.

The histories count 1,109 people in Amari’s towns in 1512 AWS.

Towns and holdings#

3 towns, holdings and camps stand in Amari, each with a history the simulation grew from its founding to 1512 AWS. Of Kyra, its largest: After the fall of Menes in 0 AWS, three peoples lived in the city. By 1512 AWS, after two exoduses, famines and plagues, it held 385 people, over three fifths of them humans, and all three founding peoples remained. The city’s greatest loss came in 1141 AWS, when it had grown too crowded for the elves and nearly three fifths of it split off under Lesyng Silverfeet.

The fall of Menes 0 to 52 AWS#

After the fall of Menes in 0 AWS, 120 people of three peoples lived in the city. They were 60 humans, 31 elves and 29 half-elves. Two of them, Sob Silverfeet and Idok Bolddelver, began houses that would one day be among the city’s largest. Within half a century the city had more than doubled, to 260. Bal Coldheart, who lived to eighty-seven, led the humans for forty-four years. In 11 AWS Bal Coldheart, who led the humans, set the city to building the Stone Walls. In these years the city took in twenty people who had fled the ruins of the Inner City.

The iron rush 53 to 107 AWS#

In 53 AWS Ablot Coppergem struck a vein of iron, the Coppergem Lode. Word went out, and in nine years 155 people came for the iron, and the city had nearly doubled. The Coppergem Lode gave out in 66 AWS. Nearly three fifths of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. In 66 AWS the city finished the Stone Walls, which Bal Coldheart had begun in 11 AWS. Hunger drove the city’s people to riot twice. The largest, in 72 AWS, was led by Sic Icyfang. In those years raiders, famine, fire and lean years killed thirty-seven people, ten of them in the famine of 72 AWS. The city rebuilt in timber the thirty-eight homes the fire of 80 AWS had burned, too poor to build in stone. Cel Silverfeet led the humans for twenty-three years. In 83 AWS House Silverfeet, led by Cel Silverfeet, became the first family in the city to number forty, the first of its great houses. Within half a century the city had doubled, to nearly five hundred. The humans’ share of the city rose from over half to over three fifths.

The blaming of the halflings 108 to 263 AWS#

In 108 AWS a party of seventy people from twenty-three houses left the city to found Verinton. Plague, famine, lean years and raiders killed nearly two hundred people in these years, 129 of them in the mire blight of 223 AWS, the worst the city ever knew. Once the mire blight had passed, the humans blamed the halflings for the deaths, and the two peoples became open enemies.

The great fire 264 to 319 AWS#

Famine came five times in those years and starved nearly two hundred people, eighty-five of them in the winters of bark in 264 AWS. Lenthe Bronzecoat, who lived to eighty-four, led the humans for forty-one years. After the winters of bark of 264 AWS starved eighty-five people, the elves and the half-elves turned against the humans, who by then made up two thirds of the city. Hostility grew between the humans and both of them. In 293 AWS Liri Scarletmaul struck a vein of tin, the Scarletmaul Lode. Word of the strike spread, and in fifteen years 302 people came for the tin, and the city had grown by nearly two thirds. In 313 AWS Avet Summerjaw set fire to Iche Clebredmere’s home, and the city’s largest fire spread to the homes of forty-five other families, burning their stores and killing nine people. Too poor to build in stone, the city raised the burned homes again in timber. Hunger drove the city’s people to riot three times. The largest, in 319 AWS, was led by Spidy Coldflare, and nine rioters were killed in all.

The revolt 320 to 415 AWS#

In 320 AWS the hungry rose in revolt. Rera Silverfeet led nearly a hundred of the hungry against the rationing, which the city no longer trusted, and overthrew it. Two of them died in it. A year later the Scarletmaul Lode, struck in 293 AWS, gave out. Over two fifths of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. When the famine of 341 AWS had starved sixty-seven people, the half-elves and the halflings turned on the humans, who by then made up two thirds of the city. Hostility grew between the humans and both of them. Reph Roparis became the humans’ leader and led them for forty years. The humans’ share of the city fell from nearly three quarters to nearly three fifths.

The Silverfeet faction 416 to 538 AWS#

In 416 AWS House Silverfeet and House Idodcroft allied as the Silverfeet faction under Vese Silverfeet. Famine came five times in these years and starved over a hundred and seventy people, sixty-two of them in 426 AWS. In 452 AWS the hungry took to eating the city’s refuse, and squalor set in. At its worst a third of the city lived on refuse, most of them humans. It lasted eight years, and its sickness killed four people. The city knew squalor three times in the same years. In 466 AWS the hungry rioted for bread, and Ehung Silverfeet led forty-seven of them. They seized nearly a quarter of the city’s stores. Eight years after the fire of 470 AWS the city rebuilt in stone the twenty-one homes it had burned, with firebreaks between wider streets, though it cost a fifth of its stores. In 506 AWS Nas Idodcroft, a human shaman, proclaimed that the Turning Wheel had made itself an avatar again, and all the humans’ great houses believed her. The next year Nas Idodcroft died, and the city prayed to her as a herald, at the Shrine of Herald Nas, on the north side of the city.

The year without summer 539 to 658 AWS#

In 539 AWS a dry fog veiled the sun, and the summer never came. Frost blackened the fields, and the harvest fell by nearly two fifths. Famine followed, and fourteen people starved. The year after brought another short harvest, and two more starved. In 548 AWS the summer failed again, and the harvest fell by two fifths. The still kitchens followed, and fifteen people starved. The hunger lasted into the next year and starved fourteen more. In 569 AWS House Silverfeet and House Winterhammer fell into a feud after Erer Silverfeet tried to rob Ego Winterhammer. It was the first feud the city had known. In 597 AWS Sceph Lenbury found a relic of the Spark, the Healer’s Bones. Pilgrims came to it, and in ten years 145 people came to stay. The pilgrims stopped coming to it in 637 AWS. Over half of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. In 636 AWS hunger turned to revolt. Rota Silverclaw led nearly a hundred of the hungry against the rationing, which the city no longer trusted, and overthrew it. Three of them died in it. The city had grown to 735 by the end of 605 AWS, but it ended these years at over five hundred.

The summer that never came 659 to 820 AWS#

In 659 AWS the summer failed. The sun hung dim behind a dry fog, snow fell in the warm months, and the harvest fell by over half. The bean rust followed, and fifty people starved. The next harvest was short too, and twelve more starved. A year later the hungry rose in revolt during the bean rust. Grune Silverclaw led nearly eighty of the hungry against the rationing, which the city no longer trusted, and overthrew it. Two of them died in it. Lean years, famine, fire and raiders killed over fifty people in those years, thirteen of them in the famine of 685 AWS. In 716 AWS Spriwat Silverfeet, who led the humans, set the city to building the Spark’s House. It took fifty years, and he did not live to see it finished in 766 AWS. Work on it stopped for two years in all. In 726 AWS a dry fog veiled the sun, and the summer never came. Frost blackened the fields, and the harvest fell by over two fifths. Famine followed, and thirty-one people starved. The fire of 787 AWS burned sixteen homes, and eight years later the city rebuilt them in stone, along wider streets, at the cost of over a fifth of its stores.

The Silverfeet schism 821 to 959 AWS#

In 821 AWS outlaws came down from the hills under Hies Coldheart, a band Trelo Silverfeet had first gathered in 578 AWS, and killed five people. The outlaws came three times in all and killed ten people. Also in 821 AWS House Bolddelver, once 47 strong, died out with Ulo Bolddelver. Six years later None Silverfeet, a devout human guard, proclaimed that the Spark had come back in a new avatar, and all the humans’ great houses believed her. In 843 AWS a feud broke out between House Silverfeet and House Lenbury because Espal Lenbury killed Meri Silverfeet. It was the first in nearly three hundred years. From 843 AWS, for over a hundred years no two houses or peoples in the city feuded or so much as fell out. In 863 AWS None Silverfeet died, and the city prayed to her as a herald, at the Shrine of Herald None, on the west side of the city. In 885 AWS Wot Silverfeet, the head of House Silverfeet, began a great hall for the house, Silverfeet Tower. It took sixty-two years, and she did not live to see it finished in 947 AWS. In 951 AWS Tiskis Silverfeet, a devout human druid, proclaimed that the Spark had come back in a new avatar. Her own house, House Silverclaw and House Winterhammer believed her. House Idodcroft and House Lenbury called it heresy.

The Lenbury exodus 960 to 1050 AWS#

In 963 AWS Tiskis Silverfeet died, and the schism over her claim ended with her. That year Ingo Silverfeet killed Prure Lenbury. The city banished the killer along with Menos Silverfeet, the head of House Silverfeet, because it blamed the house for the killing. In 968 AWS, seventeen years after Tiskis Silverfeet’s claim, the city split because of the hostility it had begun. Togy Lenbury led House Lenbury out, 60 strong, over a tenth of the city, and left the city to House Silverfeet. In 990 AWS Fimo Lenbury, who had left the city with Togy Lenbury, came back at the head of raiders and killed one person.

The Idodcroft-Silverfeet feud 1051 to 1140 AWS#

In 1051 AWS a feud broke out between House Idodcroft and House Silverfeet because Rora Silverfeet killed Mesplet Idodcroft. It was the first in over ninety years. Espup Silverfeet, who lived to eighty-six, led the humans for thirty-eight years. In 1074 AWS Sami Idodcroft found a spring sacred to the Turning Wheel, the Spring of Balance. Pilgrims came to it, and in twelve years 132 people came to stay, and the city had grown by nearly a third. The pilgrims stopped coming to it in 1121 AWS. Nearly half of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. In these years famine, lean years and fire killed a hundred people, seventy-eight of them in the famine of 1105 AWS. In 1108 AWS Spran Silverfeet, a zealous human blacksmith, proclaimed that the Spark had come back in a new avatar, and all the humans’ great houses believed him. The city had reached 749 in 1101 AWS, then fell back to nearly six hundred.

The elves leave 1141 to 1276 AWS#

In 1141 AWS 324 elves split off under Lesyng Silverfeet and left a city grown too crowded for them, nearly three fifths of the city. The city was down to 259 in 1141 AWS before it grew back to nearly six hundred. In 1156 AWS Lesyng Silverfeet came back at the head of raiders and made off with a tenth of the city’s stores. The raiders came three times in all and killed nine people. In 1189 AWS Cichog Idodcroft, who led the humans, set the city to building a temple to the Turning Wheel, the Temple of Balance. It took fifty-five years, and he did not live to see it finished in 1244 AWS. In 1232 AWS the city banished the elves’ own leader, Rama Idodcroft, who had led them for ninety years, because it blamed the elves for the raid the outlaw Roscrid Silverclaw led. The humans’ share of the city rose from nearly three fifths to nearly three quarters.

The year the dead got up 1277 to 1354 AWS#

Famine and plague killed over four hundred people in those years, 100 of them in the white scurf of 1278 AWS. Once the white scurf had passed, the humans blamed the half-elves for the deaths, and the two peoples became open enemies. The humans would blame the half-elves again after another plague, in 1352 AWS. With so many dead of the white scurf, thirteen people who had lived without a trade took one up, among them Etogh Idodcroft, who became a guard in her father’s place. In 1283 AWS the city banished the elves’ own leader, Otimen Silverclaw, who had led them for fifty-one years, because it blamed the elves for the raid Seda Silverfeet led. The next year the dead of the white scurf got up out of the Lime Trench, the pits where the city had buried them. Twenty-nine of them walked into the city remembering nothing, not even their own names, and the city took them in as House Moonwake. In 1304 AWS Oril Silverclaw dug up a mask of beaten bronze in a field outside the city, and kept it. In 1342 AWS Menomena Silverclaw put the mask of beaten bronze back in the ground, in a mound the city called the Long Barrow. In the thirty-eight years since Oril Silverclaw dug it up, it had passed through two hands, and six of those who lived with it had died before their time.

Banishments 1355 to 1512 AWS#

In 1355 AWS House Silverfeet, once 288 strong, died out with Mudron Silverfeet. The same year Imot Moonwake killed Kerakae Diphby. Because it blamed the humans for the killing, the city banished the humans’ own leader, Nispryt Barewound, who had led them for twenty-one years, along with the killer. In 1372 AWS Menomena Silverclaw, the head of House Silverclaw, began a great hall for the house, Silverclaw Hall. It took thirty-eight years, and she lived to see it finished in 1410 AWS. In 1383 AWS Tuvi Idodcroft found a relic of the Turning Wheel, the Iron Ring. Pilgrims came to it, and in ten years ninety-seven people came to stay, and the city had grown by nearly two fifths. The pilgrims stopped coming to it in 1443 AWS. Two fifths of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. In 1447 AWS Schosio Moonwake killed Iheck Barewound. The city banished the half-elves’ own leader, Iluhal Silverclaw, who had led them for three years, along with the killer, because it blamed the half-elves for the killing. In 1489 AWS House Silverclaw and House Batwyn fell into a feud after Haclo Batwyn killed Oted Silverclaw. It was the first in over four hundred years. In 1507 AWS Gine Silverclaw, a human innkeeper, proclaimed that the Ending walked the world again in a new avatar, and all the humans’ great houses believed her. A year later Gine Silverclaw died, and the city prayed to her as a herald, at the Shrine of Herald Gine, on the west side of the city. The city had grown to 640 by the end of 1431 AWS, but it ended these years at nearly four hundred.

In 1512 AWS the city held 385 people: 236 humans, 84 elves, 40 half-elves and 25 halflings. The largest house in the city was House Silverclaw, 113 strong. Its great works still stood: the Stone Walls, the Spark’s House, Silverfeet Tower, the Temple of Balance and Silverclaw Hall.

What the histories say of the other 2 towns

Verinton. Four peoples founded the town in 109 AWS, most of them from Kyra. By 1512 AWS, after a collapse, an exodus, famines and plagues, it held 373 people, nearly three quarters of them humans, and only one of its founding peoples, the halflings, was gone. The heaviest blow fell with the collapse of 1323 AWS, when the troubles cost the town over two fifths of its people.

Port Carvi. Four peoples founded the city in 964 AWS, most of them from Crecia. By 1512 AWS, after an exodus, famines and plagues, it held 351 people, nearly two thirds of them humans, and all four founding peoples remained. The heaviest blow fell in 1351 AWS, when the field rheum killed over a quarter of the city.

Talk of the towns#

What people in Amari still argue about over a drink: the feuds nobody has settled, what happened within living memory, and the names that matter now. Any of it is a reason for someone to ask a party for a favor, and the histories above have the rest of each story.

Who's who in 1512 AWS: 2 names still alive and in town

Port Carvi. Three generations of one line headed House Hollowfoot, a great house from 994 AWS, in turn, each the child of the last, from Wofrad Hollowfoot in 1326 AWS to Dope Hollowfoot. It fell into feuds with two houses, the first with House Pisfield in 1490 AWS. Twenty-eight of House Hollowfoot’s members led the half-elves, 1,027 years in all. At the end it was the largest house in the city, 137 strong.

Verinton. House Silverfeet, a great house from 114 AWS, fell into feuds with five houses, the first with House Coskley in 406 AWS over the killing of Sper Silverfeet. In 1352 AWS House Silverfeet’s head, Etusyn Silverfeet, began Silverfeet Hall, a great hall for the house, finished thirty-four years later. Ninety-two of its members led the humans, 2,648 years in all. At the end it still had sixty-nine members in the town.

d10What you grew up around
1You trained as a Kyrian warrior from the age of five and can use any weapon put in your hand.
2You were raised by healers who still keep Ettephemone's old ways, and you learned to set bones before you learned to fight.
3You grew up in Kyra, the biggest city on Sedia, where you could go a whole day without seeing a face twice.
4You worked the docks at Port Carvi, unloading ships from every port on the coast.
5Your village stayed loyal to the elders and was burned for it, and you were one of the few who got out.
6You dove for pearls off Jade Beach and once found a sunken shrine nobody else has seen.
7You crossed Traitors Pass every season with your family's caravan, and you know why it has that name.
8You were raised near the Gorefell Range, where the ground smokes and the springs run hot.
9You memorized the Amari prophecies as a child and still argue about what they mean.
10You grew up near the Ruins of Ft. Kilner, playing soldier among real soldiers' bones.
