The land#

Dumasque is an Oasis of intrigue amongst the Sands of Bone. Dumasque holds many trained scholars, wise men and women who council the heads of the 10 tribes of brotherhood. Though predominately comprised of Troll, this province does contain some human and goblins among the city, experts mostly of trade or assassination warfare. Dumasque is the only city that retains no law or restrictions due to morality in preservation of life. Its foundation rests on an unspoken code of respect and honor that is held by each of the individual tribes. The code is Rokson.

Who lives there#

Dumasque has no laws that protect a life. Nobody will stop you killing a man in the street, and nobody will stop his tribe answering for him either. What keeps the peace is Rokson, a code of respect and honor every tribe holds to, and breaking it costs more than any law ever could.

Trolls of the tribes, the city’s scholars and its traders and assassins all live under the same code. The Geni, smiths and mercenaries known across the sands, hold the city and the Vhall Oasis every tribe comes to for water, and the Monastery of the Yellow Dragon keeps to itself out at the desert’s edge.

The story of Dumasque, 0 to 1512 AWS

The fall of Menes 0 to 169 AWS#

After the fall of Menes in 0 AWS, two hundred and fifty people of four peoples lived in the city. They were 150 trolls, 48 humans, 31 half-elves and 21 halflings. By 169 AWS the city had doubled, to nearly five hundred. In 10 AWS Uxu Blazecleaver, who led the trolls, set the city to digging a mine deep under it, the Deep Delving. It took ninety-nine years, and she did not live to see it finished in 109 AWS. Work on it stopped for forty years in all. The city rebuilt in timber the fifty-eight homes the fire of 87 AWS had burned, too poor to build in stone. In those years famine, plague, lean years and raiders killed nearly two hundred and thirty people, eighty-five of them in the miller’s ague of 148 AWS, the worst the city ever knew. After the miller’s ague, the half-elves, the halflings and the humans turned on the trolls, who by then made up over two thirds of the city. Hostility grew between the trolls and each of them.

The great houses 170 to 270 AWS#

In 170 AWS House Ironbash, led by Tenthe Ironbash, became the first family in the city to number forty, the first of its great houses. Two more grew as large in the years that followed. Too poor to build in stone, the city raised timber homes in place of the twenty-four the fire of 172 AWS had burned. In 173 AWS Tog Fieryrage killed Stes Tisden. Because it blamed the trolls for the killing, the city banished the trolls’ own leader, Nu’laulg Mykug, who had led them for twenty-eight years, along with the killer. In the hills Nu’laulg Mykug gathered the exiles the city had cast out, seven outlaws in all. Photat Nukmok, who lived to 199, led the trolls for seventy-six years. The city rebuilt in timber the nineteen homes the fire of 215 AWS had burned, too poor to build in stone. Too poor to build in stone, the city raised timber homes in place of the twenty-two the fire of 253 AWS had burned.

The lead rush 271 to 340 AWS#

In 271 AWS Onag Redsnarl struck a vein of lead, the Rock Vein, in the Deep Delving. Word went out, and in ten years 324 people came for the lead, and the city had grown by nearly three fifths. The Rock Vein gave out in 284 AWS. Over half of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. Rask Redchew, who lived to 208, led the trolls for thirty-eight years. In 321 AWS the half-elves, after a year of troll crimes against them, turned on the trolls, who by then made up nearly two thirds of the city. Hostility grew between the two peoples. In 337 AWS a party of twenty-eight people from ten houses left the city to found Jixti Tribe. In these years famine, plague, lean years and fire killed nearly a hundred and eighty people, eighty-two of them in the sour loaves of 340 AWS. The city had grown to 900 by the end of 281 AWS, but it ended these years at nearly six hundred.

The revolt 341 to 389 AWS#

He’lom Redchew led the trolls for fifty-four years. After the sour loaves of 340 AWS starved eighty-two people, the city’s other peoples turned against the trolls, who by then made up nearly two thirds of the city. Hostility grew between the trolls and each of them. Resentment of the trolls would flare again in 381 AWS. In 341 AWS the hungry rose in revolt during the sour loaves. Olek Ironbash led nearly eighty of the hungry against the rationing, which the city no longer trusted, and overthrew it. Two of them died in it. Two years later a party of twenty-eight people from eight houses left the city to found Polvi Tribe.

Hatred of the trolls 390 to 474 AWS#

When the famine of 389 AWS had starved seventy-four people, the city’s other peoples turned on the trolls, who by then made up over two thirds of the city. Hostility grew between the trolls and each of them. Resentment of the trolls would flare three more times, the last in 463 AWS. In 419 AWS Magoulg Mightyrage led the outlaws of the hills, first gathered by Nu’laulg Mykug in 173 AWS, back against the city and killed five people. That year the city banished Lugh Redchew, because it blamed the trolls for the raid the outlaw Magoulg Mightyrage led. Ulgup Podgrim became the trolls’ leader and led them for seventy-five years. In 444 AWS open enmity broke out between the halflings and the trolls after Rurat Redchew tried to rob Swobo Swiftchest. In 462 AWS the Seventy-Year Plague came to the city from Tharsis and killed sixty-two people. It came back in 468 AWS and killed thirty-two more.

The squalor 475 to 523 AWS#

In 475 AWS the refuse years began. At the worst over a third of the city lived on what it threw away, trolls most of all. The squalor lifted after nine years, and its sickness killed seven people. In its seventh year the brown spots broke out in the refuse pits and killed fifty people. In 476 AWS Shicke Ironbash killed O’daulg Sprocgrim. The city banished the humans’ own leader, Arosh Wintermaster, because it blamed the humans for the killing. A year later House Ironbash and House Rimaphburn fell into a feud because Otok Ironbash killed Phusick Rimaphburn. It was the first feud the city had known. By 513 AWS the trolls, under Grarat Redchew, made up three quarters of the city’s people.

The year without summer 524 to 677 AWS#

In 524 AWS Grarat Redchew formed the Redchew faction again, joining House Redchew and House Podgrim. The city rebuilt in timber the thirteen homes the fire of 555 AWS had burned, too poor to build in stone. When the crimson scab of 615 AWS had killed seventy-eight people, the elves, the halflings and the humans turned on the trolls, who by then made up over four fifths of the city. Hostility grew between the trolls and each of them. Resentment of the trolls would flare again in 672 AWS. In 641 AWS Hago Geratdush, a devout troll blacksmith, proclaimed that the Turning Wheel had made itself an avatar again. Her own house, House Redchew, House Podgrim and House Mykug believed her. House Sprocgrim called it heresy. Five years later a party of twenty-eight people from seven houses left the city to found Torni Tribe. In 659 AWS a feud broke out between House Redchew and House Sprocgrim over that claim. Three more broke out in those years. Also in 659 AWS a dry fog veiled the sun, and the summer never came. Frost blackened the fields, and the harvest fell by over two fifths. A lean year followed, and six people starved. The hunger lasted into the next year. The trolls’ share of the city rose from nearly three quarters to nearly nine in ten.

The exile of House Geratdush 678 to 721 AWS#

In 678 AWS Tukka Geratdush killed Chug Sprocgrim. The city exiled the whole house, all 68 of its members, because it blamed the house for the killing. It had banished Mat Geratdush ten years before. Syg Mykug led the trolls for eighty-five years. In 678 AWS Hago Geratdush left the city, and the schism over her claim ended with her going. In 680 AWS, thirty-nine years after Hago Geratdush’s claim, the city split because of the enmity it had begun. Lak Sprocgrim led House Sprocgrim out, 79 strong, nearly a quarter of the city, and left the city to House Redchew. The city shrank to 252 in 681 AWS and ended these years at nearly three hundred and fifty.

The troll city 722 to 833 AWS#

In 722 AWS the trolls came to make up nine in ten of the city’s people again under Syg Mykug. Four years later a dry fog veiled the sun, and the summer never came. Frost blackened the fields, and the harvest fell by over half. A lean year followed, and three people starved. Korat Mykug, who lived to 183, led the trolls for sixty-seven years. In 774 AWS Stushrac Sprocgrim, who had left the city with Lak Sprocgrim, came back at the head of raiders and killed fifteen people. The raiders came twice in all and killed twenty people. By 786 AWS the halflings and the humans were gone from the city. The last of them were Spis Eganridge and Squepo Rimaphburn. In little more than a century the city had grown by nearly three fifths, to 524.

The Redchew-Mapdush feud 834 to 985 AWS#

In 834 AWS House Redchew and House Mapdush fell into a feud because Isa Mapdush killed Ratum Redchew. It was the first in over a hundred and seventy years. Twelve years later a party of twenty-eight people from six houses left the city to found Toleer Tribe. In 863 AWS the last half-elf in the city, Unag Wintermaster, died of old age, and the half-elves were gone. Gler Mykug, who lived to 206, led the trolls for sixty-nine years. In 946 AWS hunger turned to revolt during the dear days. Hek Mykug led nearly sixty of the hungry against the rationing, which the city no longer trusted, and overthrew it. Two of them died in it.

The third revolt 986 to 1041 AWS#

In 986 AWS the hungry rose in revolt during the meagre harvests. Thurat Redchew led nearly seventy of the hungry against the rationing, which the city no longer trusted, and overthrew it. Ugarat Podgrim, who lived to 170, led the trolls for twenty-six years. Famine came four times in these years and starved forty-five people, nineteen of them in 1009 AWS. In 1010 AWS the elves, after a year of troll crimes against them, turned against the trolls, who by then made up nearly all of the city. Hostility grew between the two peoples. Resentment of the trolls would flare again in 1033 AWS.

The age of Rali Mapdush 1042 to 1127 AWS#

Rali Mapdush led the trolls for ninety-one years. In 1055 AWS the elves, after a year of troll crimes against them, turned on the trolls, who by then made up nearly all of the city. Hostility grew between the two peoples. Resentment of the trolls would flare three more times, the last in 1114 AWS. In 1068 AWS the hungry took to the city’s refuse again. Squalor held for six years, and its sickness killed one person. In its fourth year plague broke out in the refuse pits and killed fourteen people. The plague spared those who had lived on the refuse through the squalor, and the rest of the city died at twice their rate. The city knew squalor twice in those years. Famine came five times in the same years and starved nearly eighty people, forty-two of them in the starving moons of 1067 and 1068 AWS. In 1069 AWS Luk Podgrim found a spring sacred to the Spark, the Green Spring. Pilgrims came to it, and in nine years ninety-one people came to stay. The pilgrims stopped coming to it in 1114 AWS. Nearly three fifths of the houses that had come for it left the city that year.

The overgrowth 1128 to 1265 AWS#

In 1128 AWS the city’s fields ran wild in a night, and its granary filled with half a year’s food. Then brambles and young trees took the fields themselves, and gave them back only over eighteen years. The same year Rali Mapdush, who led the trolls, set the city to building stone walls, the Boulder Wall. It took fifty-five years, and she had left the city before it was finished in 1183 AWS. Work on it stopped for thirteen years in all. In 1133 AWS a party of twenty-eight people from seven houses left the city to found Gevlar Tribe. In 1156 AWS hunger turned to revolt during the months of nettles. Ratom Redchew led over sixty of the hungry against the rationing, which the city no longer trusted, and overthrew it. Two of them died in it. Ten years later Oulga Redchew led them against the watch and overthrew it. By the end of 1157 AWS the city had fallen to 379, though it grew back to over six hundred. In 1162 AWS a baykok came out of the old graves beside the city. It came for the city twice and killed seven people, until U’dis Podgrim went out after it and killed it. Three years later the summer never came. A dry fog dimmed the sun, frost took the fields in the warm months, and the harvest fell by nearly two fifths. A lean year followed, and two people starved. The next harvest was short too. In 1216 AWS Eblok Podgrim found a spring sacred to the Spark, the Spring of Mercy. Pilgrims came to it, and in nine years 116 people came to stay. In 1252 AWS Knyn Redchew, a troll hunter, proclaimed that the Turning Wheel had made itself an avatar again. His own house, House Podgrim and House Mykug believed him. House Fouleye and House Mapdush called it heresy. Seven years later House Podgrim and House Mapdush fell into a feud over that claim. Six more broke out in these years.

Herald Anar 1266 to 1431 AWS#

In 1266 AWS a feud broke out between House Redchew and House Fouleye over Knyn Redchew’s claim. Famine, plague, raiders and fire killed nearly two hundred and fifty people in those years, seventy of them in the sorry seasons of 1266 AWS. In 1269 AWS Uplas Mapdush killed Ishi Podgrim. Because it blamed House Mapdush for the killing, the city banished the killer along with Kunup Mapdush, the head of the house. Kunup Mapdush took to the hills as an outlaw, with one other exile. Six years later another feud broke out between House Redchew and House Podgrim. The next year the pilgrims stopped coming to the Spring of Mercy, found in 1216 AWS. Nearly half of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. House Mapdush left the city to House Podgrim because of the enmity that claim had begun: 68 people under Umu Mapdush, over a tenth of the city. That year Knyn Redchew left the city, and the schism over his claim ended with him going. In 1414 AWS Anar Redchew, a zealous troll elder, proclaimed that the Turning Wheel had made itself an avatar again, and all the trolls’ great houses believed him.

The end of House Wintermaster 1432 to 1512 AWS#

By 1492 AWS the city had gone over seventy years without a feud, or so much as ill feeling between two of its houses or peoples. In 1432 AWS Ladi Wintermaster, the last elf in the city, died of old age. The same year Ladi Wintermaster died, the last of House Wintermaster, which had once been 56 strong. Ten years later an addonexus made its lair in the deep ways under the city, in a place the city came to call the Addonexus’ Hollow. It came for the city five times and killed fourteen people, until Splock Redchew went out after it and killed it. In 1493 AWS House Redchew and House Mykug fell into a feud because Lib Redchew killed Tob Mykug. It was the first in over two hundred years.

In 1512 AWS the city held 452 people: 452 trolls. No half-elves, halflings or humans were left. The largest house in the city was House Redchew, 120 strong, the house of the troll leader who had lived to 208. The Deep Delving and the Boulder Wall still stood.

Talk of the towns#

What people in Dumasque still argue about over a drink: the feuds nobody has settled, what happened within living memory, and the names that matter now. Any of it is a reason for someone to ask a party for a favor, and the histories above have the rest of each story.

Within living memory#

Who's who in 1512 AWS: 5 names still alive and in town

Hopli Tribe. By trade Gnuulg Lightfall was a craftsman, and by nature afraid of close spaces. She took to drink at 80 and gave it up five years later. She and her partner Phurat Mapdush raised her daughter Blet Lightfall as their own, though the child was Grin Ulgillug’s. Gnuulg found a spring sacred to the Turning Wheel in 1504 AWS, and ten people came to the tribe for it. She was still living among the tribe at the end, at 111.

Dumasque. House Redchew, one of the city’s founding houses, believed Hago Geratdush’s claim in 641 AWS. In 659 AWS the first of its five feuds, with House Sprocgrim, began, over Hago Geratdush’s claim. House Redchew gave the trolls ten leaders, who held the lead 380 years between them. At the end it was the largest house in the city, 120 strong, with the Redchew faction still standing.

Dumasque. House Mapdush, which had come to the city for the lead in 273 AWS, became one of the city’s great houses under Casch Mapdush in 802 AWS. In 834 AWS it fell into feuds with three houses, the first with House Redchew. House Mapdush left the city in 1280 AWS behind Umu Mapdush. At the end forty-six of its members remained in the city.

Monastery of the Yellow Dragon. House Scethbury, which had come to the monastery for the Green Cup in 1073 AWS, became one of the monastery’s great houses under Bodo Scethbury in 1182 AWS. In 1464 AWS the monastery blamed it for Gesa Scethbury’s killing of Wangu Notstead and banished its head, Vobe Scethbury. Its members led the half-elves for 625 years, twenty-five of them in turn. It was twenty-one strong at the end.

Torni Tribe. House Sprocgrim became one of the tribe’s great houses, forty-nine strong, under Uris Sprocgrim in 681 AWS, the second house of that name in the tribe. In 829 AWS one of its own, Ugi Sprocgrim, dug up a chain of linked teeth, and its people kept it for thirty-nine years, while four of those who lived with it died before their time. At the end it was the largest house in the tribe, 39 strong.

What others say#

I've never seen a fairer bargain or a quicker knife than in Dumasque. Usually from the same man.

A merchant of Port Carvi

They'll give you water in the desert even if you're their enemy. Then they'll fight you in the morning.

A soldier of Moria

A breach of Rokson

Someone poisoned a well that two tribes share, and both tribes blame each other. Under Rokson the poisoner’s whole tribe answers for it, and both are already sharpening blades. The city’s scholars want outsiders to find the truth, because no tribe will accept a verdict from another tribe.

Where you grew up#

Roll a d10 for what you grew up around in Dumasque, and a d20 on the table of family stations for who you grew up as. The button rolls both.

d10What you grew up around
1You grew up in one of the ten tribes and learned Rokson before you learned your letters.
2You studied under the city's scholars and sat in on the counsels between the tribes.
3You led water caravans across the Sands of Bone and lost a camel to the dunes every season.
4You apprenticed to a Geni smith at the Vhall Oasis and still have the burn scars.
5Your family traded salt and spices in the market, and you learned to haggle in four languages.
6You were trained, quietly, by one of the city's assassins, and nobody's told you what for yet.
7You were raised at the Monastery of the Yellow Dragon and left when they asked you to take vows.
8You hunted in the badlands with a tribal hunting party and once tracked a wounded oryx for three days.
9You kept the oasis gardens, the most valuable ground in the province, and guarded them with your life.
10Your family broke Rokson a generation ago, and you've carried the shame of it every day since.
