Jewall#
Stone doesn't lie and it doesn't forget. Neither do we. That's why outsiders find us hard to talk to.
Mountains, alpine tundra and mines that go down further than anyone admits. Jewall is the dwarvish word for stone, foundation and home, and the dwarves mean all three.
The land#
Home to the dwarves and the gnomes who work their mines. The city doesn’t have incredible trade routes with other provinces due to the difficulties of traveling through the mountains but possesses an incredible amount of raw exotic minerals and ores that proves it to be quite attractive. Jewall is the dwarvish word for stone, foundation, or home. It is not known how long the city has existed but rumors dictate the Dwarven race was made where it stands now by Lythantos. When the Kingdom of Menes fell nobody from its ruins could climb this far, and King Vendore Bromhold held the Tunnels of Tyr against the orcs of Fire Forge Chasm instead.

Who lives there#
The dwarves say Lythantos made them where Jewall stands. Nobody remembers when the city was built, only that it was always there. The roads through the mountains are bad and the trade is thin, but the ore is the best on Sedia, and the Council of Forges likes the province exactly as hard to reach as it is.
When the Kingdom of Menes fell, nobody from the ruins could climb this far, and Jewall stayed the dwarves’ alone. The orcs of Fire Forge Chasm, north-west of the city, have fought them for the Tunnels of Tyr for as long as either remembers. Gnomes have a harder story here. The Gnomish Refuge Camp is barely a hundred years old, and the gnomes in it remember what the mines were like before they left them.
The histories count 839 people in Jewall’s towns in 1512 AWS.

Towns and holdings#
5 towns, holdings and camps stand in Jewall, each with a history the simulation grew from its founding to 1512 AWS. Of Jewall, the city the province is named for: After the fall of Menes in 0 AWS, dwarves and the gnomes they held as slaves in the mines lived in the city, led by Vendore Bromhold. In 1413 AWS the gnomes rose and broke free of the dwarves, and 145 of them left together to found the Gnomish Refuge Camp. By 1512 AWS, after famines and plagues, it was a dwarf city: nearly all of its 349 people were dwarves.

The story of Jewall, 0 to 1512 AWS
The fall of Menes 0 to 98 AWS#
After the fall of Menes in 0 AWS, two hundred people of two peoples lived in the city, led by Vendore Bromhold. They were 153 dwarves and the 47 gnomes they held as slaves in the mines. Within a century the city had grown by nearly three quarters, to 344. In 15 AWS Opha Aneskmere, who led the dwarves, set the city to digging a mine deep under it, the Hammerdeep. It took twenty-six years, and he lived to see it finished in 41 AWS. In 20 AWS Sogi Finmere began to preach that the city’s days were over and that Dekkashraen would take it, and sixteen people followed the prophet out of its gates, but the city stood. Vendore Bromhold became the dwarves’ leader and led them for ninety-three years. In 73 AWS the first war in the Tunnels of Tyr was fought at the city, and sixteen of its people were killed. In 94 AWS Vendore Bromhold, who led the dwarves, set the city to building the Stone Rampart. Four years later the brewer’s fire came from Fire Forge Chasm and killed thirty-two people. Through these years the gnomes slipped away from the mines in ones and twos, five of them.
Hatred of the dwarves 99 to 148 AWS#
After the brewer’s fire of 98 AWS killed thirty-two people, the gnomes turned against the dwarves, who by then made up nearly three quarters of the city. Hostility grew between the two peoples. From 99 AWS, for forty-nine years no two houses or peoples in the city feuded or so much as fell out. In 136 AWS the city finished the Stone Rampart, which Vendore Bromhold had begun in 94 AWS. Twelve years later a lean year starved no one.
The year of the addonexus 149 to 364 AWS#
Mat Deepspine, who lived to 309, led the dwarves for ninety-three years. The fire of 190 AWS burned forty-seven homes, and three years later the city rebuilt them in stone, along wider streets, at the cost of over a quarter of its stores. In 192 AWS Mat Deepspine, who led the dwarves, set the city to building a temple to the Turning Wheel, the Deepspine Shrine. It took thirty-three years, and he lived to see it finished in 225 AWS. In 277 AWS Mat Deepspine, who led the dwarves, set the city to building the Hall of the Spark. It took twenty-one years, and he lived to see it finished in 298 AWS. In 327 AWS an addonexus made its lair in the deep ways under the city, in a place the city came to call Addonexus Den. It came for the city once and killed two people, until Haho Tafgate went out after it and killed it. Twelve years later Oblesk Greenborn found a spring sacred to the Spark, the Healing Spring. Pilgrims came to it, and in nine years ninety-seven people came to stay. A year later the dwarves lost their hold on the city as their share of it fell to nearly two thirds. In 356 AWS Bretik Highcoat, who led the dwarves, set the city to building a temple to the Ending, the Sealed Hall. The dwarves’ share of the city fell from nearly three quarters to over three fifths.
The years of the ifrit 365 to 421 AWS#
In 365 AWS an ifrit came up out of the deep ways under the city. It came for the city ten times and killed sixty-two people, until Squoc Smotridge went out after it and killed it. Bretik Highcoat led the dwarves for 143 years. In 365 AWS House Balley, led by Basogh Balley, became the first family in the city to number forty, the first of its great houses. Two years later raiders fell on the city and killed nine people. Ten years later the pilgrims stopped coming to the Healing Spring, found in 339 AWS. Nearly a tenth of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. Ten years later the city finished the Sealed Hall, which Bretik Highcoat had begun in 356 AWS.
The year of the cyclops 422 to 588 AWS#
By 524 AWS the city had gone over two hundred and fifty years without a feud, or so much as ill feeling between two of its houses or peoples. In 422 AWS a cyclops made its lair in the deep ways under the city, in a place the city came to call the Rocks of the Cyclops. It came for the city twice and killed three people, until Rys Cecwell went out after it and killed it. Ote Highcoat became the dwarves’ leader and led them for ninety years. In 477 AWS Basogh Balley, the head of House Balley, began a great hall for the house, Balley Court. It took fifty-four years, and she did not live to see it finished in 531 AWS. By 588 AWS House Balley was the largest house in the city. Cuwask Balley, a baker who married four times, headed it from 502 AWS and led the gnomes for 125 years. Two years after the fire of 535 AWS the city rebuilt in stone the twenty-two homes it had burned, with firebreaks between wider streets, though it cost over a quarter of its stores.
The overgrowth 589 to 655 AWS#
By 655 AWS the city had gone a hundred and thirty years without a feud, or so much as ill feeling between two of its houses or peoples. In 589 AWS the city’s fields ran wild in a night, and its granary filled with half a year’s food. Then brambles and young trees took the fields themselves, and gave them back only over seventeen years. Sinul Icydust led the dwarves for 116 years. By 655 AWS House Balley was the largest house in the city. Cuwask Balley, a baker who married four times, headed it from 502 AWS and led the gnomes for 125 years. In 632 AWS a party of twenty-eight people from eleven houses left the city to found the Dwarven Shrine. Eight years later Hud Highbrow began to dance in the street and could not stop. Within days thirty-three people were dancing in rings, and they danced for three months, until five of them had danced to death. It came in Lythantos’ Breath, and the mages said the wheel had slipped. Over the last 557 years forty-two more of the gnomes slipped away from the mines. The dwarves caught twelve more, and hanged one of them. In all, forty-seven of the gnomes had got out since the fall of Menes.
The Mother Lode 656 to 708 AWS#
In 656 AWS Mes Satham struck a vein of silver, the Mother Lode, in the Hammerdeep. Word of the strike spread, and in twelve years 206 people came for the silver, and the city had grown by nearly three fifths. The Mother Lode gave out in 684 AWS. Nearly a quarter of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. Streshi Terden led the dwarves for fifty-eight years. From 665 AWS forty-three years passed without a feud, or so much as ill feeling between two of the city’s houses or peoples. By 708 AWS House Balley was the largest house in the city. Spego Balley, a farmer who lived to 387, headed it from 658 AWS and led the gnomes for 105 years. In 680 AWS everything in the city grew at once, and its granary filled with half a year’s food. Then the wild came in over the fields and would not be cut back, and it was twenty-one years before the city had them all again. The gnomes went on slipping away from the mines, eleven more in these years. The dwarves caught five more, and hanged three of them.
The lead rush 709 to 883 AWS#
In 709 AWS a party of forty-two people from eighteen houses left the city to found Ironholde Prison. The peace ended in 747 AWS, after over eighty years, when Scroch Refytcroft kidnapped Oti Greysword and ill feeling grew between the dwarves and the gnomes. From 747 AWS, for over a hundred years no two houses or peoples in the city feuded or so much as fell out, and no one was banished. Dric Vecurmore, who lived to 263, led the dwarves for 121 years. By 883 AWS House Greysword was the largest house in the city. Swur Greysword, a tailor and a lover of tea, headed it from 783 AWS. In 810 AWS Swur Greysword, the head of House Greysword, began a great hall for the house, Greysword Hall. It took thirty-three years, and she did not live to see it finished in 843 AWS. In 873 AWS Antha Highcoat struck a vein of lead, the Hammer Vein, in the Hammerdeep. Word went out, and in eleven years 254 people came for the lead, and the city had grown by nearly two fifths. Still the gnomes slipped away, thirty-six of them in these years. The dwarves caught nine more, and hanged three of them.
The Greysword years 884 to 940 AWS#
By 940 AWS the city had gone ninety years without a feud, or so much as ill feeling between two of its houses or peoples. Juce Greysword became the dwarves’ leader and led them for 165 years. By 940 AWS House Greysword was the largest house in the city. Oti Greysword, a commanding official, headed it from 844 AWS. It may be that few cared to argue with Oti Greysword. In 888 AWS the Hammer Vein, struck in 873 AWS, gave out. Over a quarter of the houses that had come for it left the city that year. Eleven years later raiders fell on the city and killed one person.
The rise of the dwarves 941 to 1087 AWS#
In 962 AWS the midsummer gripe broke out and killed eighty people, the worst the city ever knew. Once the midsummer gripe had passed, the gnomes blamed the dwarves for the deaths, and the two peoples turned to hostility. From 962 AWS, for nearly a hundred and twenty years no two houses or peoples in the city feuded or so much as fell out. By 1087 AWS House Greysword was the largest house in the city. Juce Greysword, a tailor who married five times and strayed at least four times, headed it from 954 AWS and led the dwarves for 165 years. In 1083 AWS Anas Refytcroft, the gnomes’ leader, began to speak of leaving. Over the last 204 years nearly sixty more of the gnomes slipped away from the mines. The dwarves caught seven more, and hanged two of them. In all, a hundred and fifty of the gnomes had got out since the fall of Menes.
The long peace 1088 to 1192 AWS#
By 1160 AWS the city had gone nearly eighty years without a feud, or so much as ill feeling between two of its houses or peoples. In 1088 AWS famine starved three people. Tetho Greysword led the dwarves for ninety-five years.
The last war in the Tunnels of Tyr 1193 to 1357 AWS#
In 1224 AWS the last war in the Tunnels of Tyr was fought at the city, and eight of its people were killed. When the famine of 1230 AWS had starved four people, the gnomes turned on the dwarves, who by then made up over three fifths of the city. Unease grew between the two peoples. Ehet Highcoat became the dwarves’ leader and led them for 113 years. In 1295 AWS House Highcoat, led by Facen Highcoat, became one of the city’s great houses. Twelve years later Facen Highcoat, the head of House Highcoat, began a great hall for the house, Highcoat Hold. In 1347 AWS raiders fell on the city and killed fourteen people. Over the last 270 years over eighty more of the gnomes slipped away from the mines. The dwarves caught seven more, and hanged three of them. In all, nearly two hundred and fifty of the gnomes had got out since the fall of Menes.
Highcoat Hold 1358 to 1412 AWS#
In 1358 AWS the city finished Highcoat Hold, which Facen Highcoat had begun in 1307 AWS. Spruple Greyhelm, who lived to 349, led the dwarves for forty-four years. In 1400 AWS House Pafby grew to forty members under Sweluc Pafby and became one of the city’s great houses. That year a fire began in Ser Latshaw’s home and spread to the homes of eight other families, burning their stores and killing one person.
The gnomes go 1413 to 1454 AWS#
In 1413 AWS the gnomes rose under Clata Mightycutter and broke free of the dwarves. Seven died in the fighting, and the gnomes left the city together, 145 of them from fifteen houses, to found the Gnomish Refuge Camp. The same year the dwarves came to make up nearly all of the city’s people under Sweluc Pafby. In 1441 AWS Ryle Pafby, a devout dwarf laborer, proclaimed that the Turning Wheel had made itself an avatar again. His own house believed him. House Highcoat called it heresy. Seven years later Stiha Pafby, the head of House Pafby, began a great hall for the house, Pafby Hold. By 1454 AWS the city had lost over a third of its people, to over two hundred and fifty. The dwarves’ share of the city rose from over three fifths to all.
The Highcoat-Pafby feud 1455 to 1512 AWS#
In 1455 AWS House Highcoat and House Pafby fell into a feud over Ryle Pafby’s claim. It was the first feud the city had known. Otof Pafby led the dwarves for forty-five years. In 1467 AWS House Darkfall and House Highcoat allied as the Darkfall faction under Lire Darkfall. The next year Tewe Raskley found a spring sacred to the Turning Wheel, the Wheel’s Well. Pilgrims came to it, and in eight years sixty-five people came to stay. Eleven years later the city finished Pafby Hold, which Stiha Pafby had begun in 1448 AWS. In 1498 AWS raiders fell on the city and killed four people. Ten years later Ryle Pafby died, and the schism over his claim ended with him.
In 1512 AWS the city held 349 people: 340 dwarves and 9 gnomes. Oclet Pafby led the dwarves. The largest house in the city was House Pafby, 47 strong, the house of Otof Pafby, who had led the dwarves for forty-five years. Its great works still stood: the Hammerdeep, the Stone Rampart, the Deepspine Shrine, the Hall of the Spark, the Sealed Hall, Balley Court, Greysword Hall, Highcoat Hold and Pafby Hold. Pilgrims still came to the Wheel’s Well, found in 1468 AWS.
What the histories say of the other 4 towns
Fire Forge Chasm. After the fall of Menes in 0 AWS, orcs lived in the tribe. By 1512 AWS, after forty-two exoduses, famines and plagues, its 196 people belonged to three houses. The tribe’s greatest loss came in 474 AWS, when it had grown too full of orcs and nearly three fifths of it left with Cra’korat Wisebrand to settle new land.
Gnomish Refuge Camp. Gnomes who had risen and broken free of their bondage in Jewall founded the town in 1415 AWS. By 1512 AWS its 195 people belonged to twenty-three houses.
Ironholde Prison. Two peoples founded the fortress in 710 AWS, most of them from Jewall. By 1512 AWS, after famines and a plague, it was a dwarf fortress: all of its 78 people were dwarves, and the gnomes were gone. In all that time no two of its houses fell into a feud.
Dwarven Shrine. Two peoples founded the monastery in 635 AWS, most of them from Jewall. By 1512 AWS, after a plague and a famine, it was a dwarf monastery: nine in ten of its 21 people were dwarves, and the humans were gone. In all that time no two of its houses fell into a feud.
Talk of the towns#
What people in Jewall still argue about over a drink: the feuds nobody has settled, what happened within living memory, and the names that matter now. Any of it is a reason for someone to ask a party for a favor, and the histories above have the rest of each story.
Within living memory#
- 1510, Gnomish Refuge Camp. Ehisch Barebuckle murdered Tefe Oseskford and was caught.
- 1507, Gnomish Refuge Camp. Raiders fell on the town in 1507 AWS, killed 9 people and took 35% of the town’s stores.
- 1499, Gnomish Refuge Camp. Ehisch Barebuckle murdered Reno Copperbasher.
- 1481, Gnomish Refuge Camp. Raiders fell on the town in 1481 AWS, killed 3 people and took 25% of the town’s stores.
- 1481, Gnomish Refuge Camp. Noho Vasden murdered Ces Latshaw and was caught.
- 1478, Jewall. Open enmity broke out between House Highcoat and House Pafby over Ryle Pafby’s claim.
- 1466, Dwarven Shrine. Raiders fell on the monastery in 1466 AWS and took 18% of the monastery’s stores.
- 1463, Fire Forge Chasm. Tufu Ukoghmok led 50 orcs out of a tribe grown too full of their kind.
Who's who in 1512 AWS: 5 names still alive and in town
Gnomish Refuge Camp. Icen Oseskford, a warrior, led the gnomes from the town’s founding to the end, ninety-seven years, longer than anyone in the town’s history. He set the town to digging a mine deep under it in 1452 AWS, and lived to see it finished twenty-five years later. He took to drink at 305. He was still living in the town at the end, at 329.
Gnomish Refuge Camp. Hino Balley, a scout, took to drink at 95 and gave it up three years later. She struck a vein of copper in 1456 AWS, and 100 people came to the town for it. She was still living in the town at the end, at 181.
Fire Forge Chasm. In 295 AWS the tribe blamed House Ukoghmok for Quan Ukoghmok’s killing of Besk Wisebrand and banished its head, Udu Ukoghmok. It believed Swon Wisebrand’s claim in 1017 AWS. Its members led the orcs for 472 years, sixty-four of them in turn. It was sixty-four strong at the end, and the Ukoghmok faction still stood.
Jewall. Four of House Highcoat’s members led the dwarves, 395 years in all. Its head, Facen Highcoat, began Highcoat Hold, a great hall for the house in 1307 AWS, finished fifty-one years later. In 1441 AWS it called Ryle Pafby’s claim heresy. At the end it still had forty-one members in the city.
Jewall. One of House Pafby’s own, Ryle Pafby, proclaimed that the Turning Wheel had made itself an avatar again in 1441 AWS. Seven years later its head, Stiha Pafby, began Pafby Hold, a great hall for the house, finished thirty-one years later. Seven years later it fell into a feud with House Highcoat over Ryle Pafby’s claim. At the end House Pafby was the largest house in the city, 47 strong.

What others say#
My sister is still down there. The dwarves call it a contract. We call it a chain.
Best steel on Sedia, and the dwarves will make you wait a season for the privilege of overpaying for it.
The deep shaft
A crew in the lowest mine broke into a gallery nobody dug, cold as midwinter and lined with old dwarven runes. The Council of Forges sealed it the same day and put out word that nothing was found. Two of the crew have gone missing since, and the third wants to hire someone who doesn’t answer to the Council.
Where you grew up#
Roll a d10 for what you grew up around in Jewall, and a d20 on the table of family stations for who you grew up as. The button rolls both.
| d10 | What you grew up around |
|---|---|
| 1 | You worked the ore carts in the deep mines from the age of eight and can find your way through them in the dark. |
| 2 | You grew up at the Gnomish Refuge Camp, among people who'd walked out of the mines with nothing. |
| 3 | You were a forge-runner at the Great Forge and carried coal for smiths who never learned your name. |
| 4 | Your family has guarded Ironholde Prison for three generations, and you've seen who the Council locks away. |
| 5 | You were raised at the Dwarven Shrine and learned the rune-songs before you learned to count. |
| 6 | You guided traders over the mountain passes and buried more than one who ignored your advice. |
| 7 | Your family hauled ore for a Tharsian house and stayed on, and after three generations the dwarves still count you a guest. |
| 8 | You hunted goats on the alpine tundra and spent whole winters in a stone hut above the snow line. |
| 9 | You fought in the arena pits, where Jewall's soldiers earn their first titles, and your scars came early. |
| 10 | Your family hauls ingots down the Tunnels of Tyr to Tharsis and back, and the tunnels are getting stranger. |
