The land#

It’s not quite known when New Saellem was born or by what hand. The entirety of the city’s history is shrouded in mystery. It’s rumored that the city now stands on the old testing site of Esthar’s ancient Mage grounds. These rumored grounds were where they tested the strongest magic, most now outlawed and forbidden to be taught or learned. The landsite of New Saellem is home to many different races and travelers.

Who lives there#

New Saellem takes in everyone. After the fall a piece of the Everspark was set down on the old mage grounds and the ground woke: it hums, frozen fields bear and the tundra gives ores no other ground does, and people of every race came to it and stayed. Pixies and sprites keep their own encampments here, the ports at Doonan trade with anyone who can survive the ice, and its towns are full of travelers who came north for a season and stayed. Nobody asks too many questions, partly because nobody has many answers about the place itself.

The Exuvae keep their seat here, chasing what the ancients knew, and the ground under the province holds frozen vaults that may be what they’re after. Above the Scar a dormant point of dark light still hangs in the sky. The Rift Watch at Virgil Outpost keeps an eye on it, and it’s the first thing anyone points out to a newcomer. The Watch believes it is where something on the other side noticed Lythantos reaching out of the world when Menes fell, and that it is still looking in.

Towns and holdings#

14 towns, holdings and camps stand in New Saellem, each with a history the simulation grew from its founding to 1512 AWS. Of Karthage, its largest: Twelve peoples founded the city in 547 AWS, most of them from Tarmaly. By 1512 AWS, after two collapses, two exoduses, famines and plagues, the humans made up nearly nine in ten of its 560 people, and seven of its founding peoples were gone. The city’s greatest loss came in 1434 AWS, when nearly three fifths of the city left with House Oldgaze.

The story of Karthage, 547 to 1512 AWS

The founding 547 to 604 AWS#

The city was founded in 547 AWS by 111 people of eleven houses from Tarmaly. Another eighty-nine settlers joined them. They were of twelve peoples, the most numerous the humans, elves, half-orcs and half-elves. By 604 AWS the city had tripled, to nearly six hundred. By then the quicklings had narrowly overtaken the humans as the city’s largest people, 204 to 196. In 547 AWS House Taperley, led by Nogo Taperley, became the first family in the city to number forty, the first of its great houses. Two more grew as large in the years that followed. In 573 AWS Ose Taperley, who led the humans, set the city to building stone walls, the Great Wall. It took twenty-eight years, and she did not live to see it finished in 601 AWS. Small houses died out fast, and by 605 AWS only fifty-five of the hundred founding houses were left.

The Reddagger-Bapelward feud 605 to 658 AWS#

In 605 AWS House Reddagger and House Bapelward fell into a feud after Othis Bapelward killed Konga Reddagger. It was the first feud the city had known. Two more broke out in those years. Wisa Taperley, who lived to eighty-seven, led the humans for forty years. The city rebuilt in timber the twenty-one homes the fire of 622 AWS had burned, too poor to build in stone. In 632 AWS famine starved ninety-four people, because blight had cut the harvest by nearly three fifths. In 645 AWS Toshi Phesstead led House Phesstead out of the city and left it to House Reddagger: 78 people, over a tenth of the city. They left because of the hostility between House Phesstead and House Reddagger, which began when Ehon Reddagger killed Dase Phesstead in 642 AWS. By then the humans had overtaken the quicklings as the city’s largest people. They made up nearly half of the city, the quicklings over a quarter.

The year without summer 659 to 733 AWS#

In 659 AWS the summer never came. A dry fog dimmed the sun, frost took the fields in the warm months, and the harvest fell by nearly half. The corn rot followed, and thirty-eight people starved. The year after brought another short harvest, and 174 more starved. Three years after the fire of 683 AWS the city rebuilt in stone the fifteen homes it had burned, with firebreaks between wider streets, though it cost over a fifth of its stores. In 686 AWS the last kobold in the city, Othisch Olddelver, died of old age, and the kobolds were gone. In 704 AWS Ceded Reddagger, the head of House Reddagger, began a great hall for the house, Reddagger Keep. Three years later a feud broke out between House Taperley and House Uliglow because Scocu Uliglow killed Tere Taperley. It was the first in nearly eighty years. In 726 AWS the summer failed. The sun hung dim behind a dry fog, snow fell in the warm months, and the harvest fell by over half. Famine followed, and sixty-three people starved. The hunger lasted into the next year. By 733 AWS the city had lost over a third of its people, to nearly four hundred.

The revolt 734 to 829 AWS#

In 734 AWS the hungry rose in revolt during the winters of dust. Temur Taperley led nearly sixty of the hungry against the keepers of the granaries, whom the city no longer trusted, and overthrew them. Five of them died in it. From 734 AWS, for over seventy years no two houses or peoples in the city feuded or so much as fell out. Famine came four times in these years and starved over a hundred people, fifty-nine of them in the winters of dust in 734 AWS. In 741 AWS the city finished Reddagger Keep, which Ceded Reddagger had begun in 704 AWS. Work on it stopped for five years in all. Six years later a party of seventy people from twelve houses left the city to found Dupree. The city was down to 275 in 748 AWS before it grew back to over four hundred. The fire of 757 AWS burned twelve homes, and two years later the city rebuilt them in stone, along wider streets, at the cost of nearly a quarter of its stores. In 777 AWS Fate Shimmerwall, the last halfling in the city, died of old age. In 800 AWS Whegu Uliglow, the head of House Uliglow, began a great hall for the house, Uliglow Hall.

The age of Twoceg Uliglow 830 to 950 AWS#

Twoceg Uliglow, who lived to ninety, led the humans for forty-five years. In 849 AWS the city finished Uliglow Hall, which Whegu Uliglow had begun in 800 AWS. Work on it stopped for two years in all. After the yellow spots of 893 AWS killed seventy-five people, the city’s other peoples turned against the humans, who by then made up nearly two thirds of the city. Hostility grew between the humans and each of them. Resentment of the humans would flare twice more, the last time in 950 AWS. Too poor to build in stone, the city raised timber homes in place of the ten the fire of 907 AWS had burned. In 916 AWS Tyno Uliglow, a devout human herbalist, proclaimed that the Turning Wheel had made itself an avatar again, and all the humans’ great houses believed him. Nine years later House Uliglow and House Oldgaze fell into a feud because Thaste Oldgaze killed Spute Uliglow. Three more broke out in those years. Long after, the feud between House Uliglow and House Oldgaze followed both houses to the Pixie Encampment, where it broke out again, and later to Tarmaly. In 943 AWS Tyno Uliglow died, and the city prayed to him as a herald, at the Shrine of Herald Tyno, on the south side of the city. The humans’ share of the city rose from over three fifths to nearly three quarters.

The humans gain ground 951 to 995 AWS#

Famine came three times in these years and starved nearly two hundred and fifty people, 193 of them in the spelt blight of 951 and 952 AWS. When the spelt blight of 951 AWS had starved 149 people, the dwarves and the elves turned on the humans, who by then made up nearly three quarters of the city. Hostility grew between the humans and both of them. In 953 AWS a feud broke out between House Uliglow and House Ratucmok because Leb Ratucmok killed Tus Uliglow out of hatred of the humans. In 975 AWS House Reddagger, once 212 strong, died out with Arigh Reddagger. By 995 AWS the humans, under Haz Gravewake, made up three quarters of the city’s people.

Collapse and recovery 996 to 1190 AWS#

In 996 AWS the months of hail left the city nearly a quarter short of food and starved twenty-three people. The city’s stores had run empty and its rulers had lost all standing with the people, and in 997 AWS the city collapsed because of the months of hail. That year House Oldgaze and House Ratucmok fell into a feud after Splor Oldgaze kidnapped Spitu Ratucmok. It was the first in forty-four years. Two years later the troubles ended, by which time the city had fallen from nearly five hundred to 218. The city had learned to keep granaries against lean years. In 1039 AWS Van Gravewake, who led the humans, set the city to building the Hall of the Wheel. It took forty-six years, and she did not live to see it finished in 1085 AWS. In 1075 AWS House Uliglow and House Gravewake renewed their alliance as the Uliglow faction under Blet Uliglow. In 1165 AWS the summer never came. A dry fog dimmed the sun, frost took the fields in the warm months, and the harvest fell by over two fifths. Famine followed, and forty-four people starved. The next harvest was short too, and six more starved.

A second collapse 1191 to 1258 AWS#

In 1191 AWS the empty cupboards left the city nearly two fifths short of food and starved sixty-eight people. The city’s stores had run empty, its rulers had lost the people’s trust and the humans’ leader, Itonth Uliglow, had died of hunger, and in 1192 AWS the city collapsed again because of the empty cupboards. By 1193 AWS the city looked to the Pixie Encampment for grain in lean years. In 1194 AWS the troubles ended, by which time the city had fallen from nearly six hundred to 258. The city had learned to keep its institutions in check. In 1216 AWS the humans came to make up nine in ten of the city’s people under Aglet Uliglow, because the collapse of 1192 AWS had thinned the other peoples.

The end of House Ratucmok 1259 to 1312 AWS#

In 1259 AWS House Ratucmok, once 75 strong, died out with Screhit Ratucmok. Twelve years later Sato Oldgaze killed Ocrives Uliglow. Because it blamed the humans for the killing, the city banished the humans’ own leader, Espyng Oldgaze, who had led them for two years, along with the killer. In the hills Espyng Oldgaze gathered the exiles the city had cast out, four outlaws in all. Twelve years later Edit Oldgaze, who led the humans, set the city to building a temple to the Spark, the Temple of Mercy. After the plague of 1287 AWS killed twenty-four people, the city’s other peoples turned against the humans, who by then made up nearly nine in ten of the city. Hostility grew between the humans and each of them.

Hatred of the humans 1313 to 1373 AWS#

When the famine of 1312 AWS had starved thirty-six people, four of the city’s peoples turned on the humans, who by then made up over four fifths of the city. Hostility grew between the humans and each of them. Resentment of the humans would flare three more times, the last in 1368 AWS. In 1325 AWS the city finished the Temple of Mercy, which Edit Oldgaze had begun in 1283 AWS. Wupli Gravewake, who lived to eighty-one, led the humans for twenty-seven years. In 1356 AWS the humans’ hold on the city loosened as their share of it fell to nearly four fifths. Ten years later a feud broke out between House Gravewake and House Uliglow because Ralus Gravewake killed Spymy Uliglow. It was the first in nearly four hundred years.

The blaming of the half-elves 1374 to 1433 AWS#

After the pale moons of 1373 AWS starved fifty-five people, five of the city’s peoples turned against the humans, who by then made up nearly four fifths of the city. Hostility grew between the humans and each of them. Resentment of the humans would flare three more times, the last in 1427 AWS. In those years famine, plague and lean years killed over three hundred people, 158 of them in the pale moons of 1374 AWS. The city shrank to 434 in 1375 AWS and ended these years at nearly six hundred. After the thaw quinsy of 1406 AWS killed 122 people, the humans blamed the half-elves for the deaths, and open enmity broke out between the two peoples.

The Oldgaze exodus 1434 to 1512 AWS#

In 1434 AWS House Oldgaze left the city to House Uliglow: 326 people under Tohi Oldgaze, nearly three fifths of the city. They left because of the hostility between House Uliglow and House Oldgaze, which began when I’ulgib Oldgaze took the lead of the orcs from Oschash Uliglow in 1433 AWS. By the end of 1434 AWS the city had fallen to 258, though it grew back to nearly six hundred. In 1488 AWS Tepa Gravewake, a human healer, proclaimed that the Turning Wheel had made itself an avatar again, and all the humans’ great houses believed her. In 1504 AWS famine starved seventy-one people. When the famine of 1504 AWS had starved seventy-one people, the city’s other peoples turned on the humans, who by then made up nearly nine in ten of the city. Hostility grew between the humans and each of them.

In 1512 AWS the city held 560 people: 488 humans, 26 half-orcs, 19 elves, 15 orcs and 12 half-elves. No dwarves, gnomes, halflings, kobolds, pixies, quicklings or sprites were left. Tigi Uliglow led the humans. Of the hundred founding houses three remained. The largest was House Uliglow, 270 strong, the house of the human leader who had lived to ninety. Its great works still stood: the Great Wall, Reddagger Keep, Uliglow Hall, the Hall of the Wheel and the Temple of Mercy.

Talk of the towns#

What people in New Saellem still argue about over a drink: the feuds nobody has settled, what happened within living memory, and the names that matter now. Any of it is a reason for someone to ask a party for a favor, and the histories above have the rest of each story.

Who's who in 1512 AWS: 11 names still alive and in town

Harrow Ridge. Schal Brightwood, a warrior, became the elves’ leader in 1264 AWS and led them to the end, 248 years, longer than anyone in the town’s history. In 1430 AWS she rose at the head of over seventy of the hungry and overthrew the rationing, one of four riots she led. She was still living in the town at the end, at 711.

Dillan. House Stormhead, which had come to the town for the copper in 717 AWS, became one of the town’s great houses under Gysco Stormhead in 925 AWS. In 1014 AWS the first of its three feuds, with House Deepcrag, began. Thirty of House Stormhead’s members led the humans, 621 years in all. At the end it was the largest house in the town, 176 strong, with the Stormhead faction still standing.

Doonan. House Taperley, founded with the town by Nepo Taperley, became one of the town’s great houses under Tinu Taperley in 570 AWS. At the end it was the largest house in the town, 68 strong.

Karthage. House Uliglow, founded with the city by Tehon Uliglow, became one of the city’s great houses under Woshe Uliglow in 707 AWS. That year the first of its four feuds, with House Taperley, began over the killing of Tere Taperley. House Uliglow gave the half-orcs eighty-five leaders, who held the lead 1,371 years between them. At the end it was the largest house in the city, 270 strong, with the Uliglow faction still standing.

Port of Doonan. House Taperley came to feud with three houses, beginning in 460 AWS with House Phapworth, over Howi Taperley’s claim. In 1158 AWS House Taperley left the city behind Som Taperley. Its members led the humans for 910 years, thirty-four of them in turn. At the end one of its members remained in the city.

House Weakbasher gave the orcs 135 leaders, who held the lead 1,708 years between them. At the end it was the largest house in the city, 244 strong.

Sarville Crossing. House Lonebrace came with the town’s founders, and under Mubyt Lonebrace it became one of the town’s great houses in 1036 AWS. Three years later one of its own, Strot Lonebrace, proclaimed that the Spark had come back in a new avatar. It gave the orcs thirty leaders, who held the lead 444 years between them. At the end it was the largest house in the town, 66 strong.

Sprite Encampment. House Goldenchin’s head, Eluk Goldenchin, began Goldenchin Court, a great hall for the house in 1446 AWS, finished sixty-three years later. In 1492 AWS it took House Nicash into an alliance, the Goldenchin faction under Wegh Goldenchin. House Goldenchin gave the humans four leaders, who held the lead sixty-four years between them. At the end it was the largest house in the tribe, 50 strong, and the Goldenchin faction still stood.

Tarmaly. House Taperley, one of the city’s founding houses, came to feud with ten houses, beginning in 361 AWS with House Elderbender over the killing of Ricu Elderbender. What others say#

Every third person in New Saellem is hiding from something. The other two are trying to find out what.

A halfling of Tharsis

The ground there hums if you sleep on it long enough. The locals stopped noticing generations ago.

A priest of Crecia

What the frost gave back

A thaw near Harrow Ridge uncovered a ring of standing stones nobody remembers, and the snow won’t settle inside it. An Exuvae scholar has already arrived, and so has someone from the Rift Watch, and they disagree badly about what should happen next. Both want to hire the party.

Where you grew up#

Roll a d10 for what you grew up around in New Saellem, and a d20 on the table of family stations for who you grew up as. The button rolls both.

d10What you grew up around
1You trapped furs on the tundra and sold them at Port of Doonan to captains who wouldn't stay past the tide.
2You grew up in Karthage, the largest city in the north, where half your neighbors were born somewhere else.
3You cut ice from the frozen wetlands and learned exactly how thick is thick enough.
4You were raised near the Pixie Encampment and still speak a little of their language.
5Your parent served at Virgil Outpost, and you grew up watching the dark light over the Scar.
6You were a novice at the Monastery of the Blue Dragon until something made you leave.
7You ran a ferry at Sarville Crossing and met every kind of traveler heading north.
8Your family keeps reindeer in the boreal forest and moves with them every season.
9You survived the Battle of Gilden as a child, and the town that rebuilt afterward isn't the one you remember.
10You dug in the frozen ground for anything the old mage grounds had buried, and once you found something.
