Jewelcrafting#

The process of jewelcrafting is a little more complicated than other tradeskills as the products are smaller and require more precision and steps. Gems are the most basic and important component of jewelcrafting as their specific properties are unique and most sought after.

Melting of Material#

The first phase starts with taking a source ore and processing it into a melted form so it can be casted. In order to melt the material in the crucible the forge needs to be heated up to the materials particular critical point. The forge is heated up by pressing the bellows. The hotter the forge the more fuel it consumes. When the fuel depletes the forge will gradually decrease in heat until it reaches room temperature. Over time the maximum heat of the forge decreases as fuel is consumed so occasionally the miner will need to have to reshape the flame. jewelcrafting melting

Creating Raw Product#

The second phase begins with the crucible being poured into a mold. Provided the required amount of melted material is available in the crucible, the raw product begins to form within the mold as it cools. Using tongs the jeweler will pull the hot raw product from the mold and then put it into the slack tub for quenching which rapidly cools the product and allows it to be further refined in the last phase. jewelcrafting casting

Refining The Product#

The last phase of creating jewelry is the most involved in processes. At this phase the raw product already mostly looks like it’s final form, but is missing a gem and may have some more intricate details missing as they can’t be represented in a generic sand-casted mold. The raw product is first cleaned of flash which is small imperfections as a result of the mold and refined into it’s most specific form by engraving by hand. Provided the jeweler has already cut a gem to be placed into the jewelry, it’s inset into the product and then finally polished. Cutting a gem uses 3 material. jewelcrafting casting

Materials#

| Name | Description | |—|—| | workbench | a bench is required for some tradesguilds to perform tasks. a bench is generally 36 by 80 stones in surface area, and made of either stone, or a hard wood or metal surface with wooden legs. few benches have metal legs as the weight of the table would prevent transportation of it. stone tables are generally carved out of the environment and seen mostly within jewall. | | slack tub | tub of cool water used to extinguish heat from hot metals after they’re done being cast. | | forge | helps in heating of materials contained as ingots into molds by melting them into a liquid state. | | hearth | very similar to a forge, a hearth is a smaller version where the crucible actually sets ontop instead of within. a hearth heats up to melt the material within the crucible. | | tuyere | item used to breathe air into a hearth or forge to increase the heat. | | tongs | tongs are metallic tools that bend at the top apex, allowing the tips to clamp and surface with the continued force of squeezing the handles together. tongs are used to hold very hot items, predominately those that need to be transported to the quench tank to cool. | | file | a tool with a roughened surface or surfaces, typically of steel, used for smoothing or shaping a hard material. | | jeweler hammer | used to shape a material intricately by bending. | | engraving rotary | required to refine a jewelcraftings form, increasing the accuracy of the product. | | mandrel | device needed to shape jewelry. | | pliers | used to move gems delicately into jewelry insets, whether they are bazel, prong, or channel. pliers have pincers with parallel, flat and typically serrated surfaces and are used fhiefly for gripping small objects or bending wire. |

Skills#

| Name | Description | |—|—| | fuel fire | issues coal into a hearth or forge. | | press bellows | increases the heat of the hearth or forge by forcing air into it (forge) or upon it (hearth) through a tuyere. | | reshape flame | increases the maximum heat potential by assembling a new layer of damp coal around the edge of the earth or forge. | | cast mold | use a present mold to cast an item of the molds type by pouring the melted material into it. | | release mold | after the melted metal cools into a solid, releasing a mold clears the hot raw product from the mold making it ready for quenching. | | quench | done immediately after releasing a mold quenching dumps the hot raw product into a slack tub so it can be swagged. | | clean flash | cleans the hot raw product so its form is more accurate | | refine form | requiring an engraving rotary, refines a form to be perfect beyond what a mold can do | | cut gem | cuts a raw gem so it can be placed within jewelry, it uses exactly 3 material amount to make a gem cut for jewelry | | inset gem | insets cut gem into non-gemmed finished jewelry (only one gem per jewelry piece) | | polish | polishes the item and gem, increasing value. | | identify gem | identifies a gem and its worth. | | appraise jewelry | identifies the value and effects of jewelry. |
