Engineering#

The sigil of engineering

Anyone can lift a stone. Engineering is lifting it once, so nobody has to again.

Ludo Kesh, guildmaster of engineering

The trade of things bigger than one craftsman: carts, wagons, carriages, boats, ships and siege engines. Engineers don't make parts so much as put them together, and they need every other trade to do it.

Ranks and quests#

The guild’s hall sets each rank’s quest. Six ranks has what every rank makes, and making something how the craft roll works.

  1. Level0
    Rank 1: Inquirer

Trash to Shoddy · ×1 worth · 1d6 craft roll

Carry parts for a week on a work the hall is building, and learn the name of every one.

  2. Level20
    Rank 2: Hobbyist

Crude to Inferior · ×1.25 worth · 2d6 craft roll

Build a cart that makes it from one town to the next without losing a wheel.

  3. Level40
    Rank 3: Apprentice

Shoddy to Acceptable · ×1.5 worth · 2+3d6 craft roll

Build a sled or a boat and take it out yourself.

  4. Level60
    Rank 4: Journeyman

Poor to Fine · ×1.75 worth · 4+4d6 craft roll

Fix a carriage axle on the road with the passengers still waiting inside.

  5. Level80
    Rank 5: Master

Inferior to Flawless · ×2 worth · 5+5d6 craft roll

Raise a catapult or ballista for a town that expects an attack, and be there when it comes.

  6. Level100
    Rank 6: Artisan

Adequate to Masterwork · ×3 worth · 6+6d6 craft roll

Build a ship or a trebuchet with parts from four other trades, and get every one of them to deliver on time.

The work#

An engineer builds a work, something too big for one trade to make, from parts other trades make: axles, springs and hubs from blacksmiths, wheels, spokes and shafts from fletchers, seats and benches from carpenters, and cloth and leather for covers. Engineering has no skills of its own. An engineer’s skill is knowing how it all goes together.

Building a work#

Gather every part the work needs, then roll your rank’s craft roll against the work’s DC like any other piece. A miss doesn’t ruin the parts: it costs a day, and you try again tomorrow.

What it makes#

Works#

WorkDCDescription
Sled6A vehicle, typically on runners, for conveying goods or passengers over snow or ice, either pushed or pulled by horses or dogs.
Canoe6A canoe is a slender rowboat meant for only streams or lakes, and isn’t capable of withstanding much damage. It has a high probability of tipping a person if struck. It can only hold two people comfortably.
Rowboat8A rowboat is made to hold one person that uses two oars to propell the boat forward. This is not used outside of inland lakes, streams and rivers.
Cart8A cart is a mini-wagon, able to be carried by 1 horse or donkey, and is used predominately to wagons in inner-city situations. It may hold between 2 and 4 people comfortably.
Battering Ram10A ehavy object rammed against a door to break it down.
Wagon12A wagon is a large covered cart used to hold up to 8 people or a bunch of items for long trips. It is usually pulled by between 2 and 4 horses depending on the weight of the load and length of distance needed to be traveled.
Fishing Boat12A fishing boat is a small boat propelled by sails, oars or both and is used in a variety of locations. It only holds two people comfortably.
Carriage15A carriage is a nice covered wagon in the shape of a box-car that has a tendency to be very regal or elegant. Carriages are covered enclosures pulled by 2 to 6 horses and hold 4 enclosed people as well as 2 coaches.
Catapult16A device in which accumulated tension is suddenly released to hurl an object some distance.
Stagecoach18A stagecoach is a carriage that holds the same as a carriage but is more expansive nonetheless, sometimes having amenities like ice boxes or alcohol on tap with glasses.
Ballista18A form of catapult used to hurl long firey spears long distances.
Longship18A longship is a narrow wooden ship with oars and one large square sail. It is usually used by pirates, and was very common before the age of commerce. It holds between 30 and 50 people comfortably.
Trebuchet22A machine used in warfare for hurling large stones a long ways.
Galley22A galley is a large warship propelled by oars, sails or both. It is used mostly around the crecian port as its hull isn’t strong enough for some of the northern or southern waves and storms. It can bunk 15 to 30 people comfortably.
Warship25A warship is much similar to a galley except without oars, and is armored and built with machines capable of shotting multiple large arrows called ballistas and occasionally flaming catapults into other ships. It is highly resistant to fire and can hold between 50 and 100 people comfortably.

Parts#

The parts other trades make for a work, at their own DCs.

Parts (15)
PartDCMaterialMade byDescription
Carriage Axle101 metalBlacksmithingA carriage axle connects the wheels of a carriage allowing them to rotate and turn while supporting the weight of the vehicle and passengers.
Carriage Driver Seat101 woodFletcheryThe carriage driver seat is an elevated seat that allows the driver to easily monitor the horses and keep track of the reins.
Carriage Hub101 metalBlacksmithingA carriage hub acts as the connecting point between the wheel and axle, allowing the wheel to rotate smoothly while supporting the weight of the carriage by housing bearings within its structure.
Carriage Lamp101 metalBlacksmithingThe carriage lamp helps provide visibility to the road for the carriage driver without blinding them.
Carriage Leaf Spring101 metalBlacksmithingCarriage leaf springs help absorb the shock and vibrations from the road to provide a more comfortable ride for passengers.
Carriage Shaft101 woodFletcheryA carriage shaft connects the carriage to the tongue which ties to the horses.
Carriage Spoke101 woodFletcheryA carriage spoke distributes the weight of the carriage across the entire wheel, ensuring structural integrity and allowing it to rotate smoothly.
Carriage Step101 metalBlacksmithingA carriage step allows passengers to get on and off the horse-drawn carriage.
Carriage Tongue101 woodFletcheryA carriage tongue helps connect a team of horses to the carriage to allow it to steer properly.
Carriage Wheel101 woodFletcheryA carriage wheel holds up the carriage and rotates as it moves forward, being pulled usually by horses or livestock.
Cart Axle1020 metalBlacksmithingAn iron bar running beneath a cart that carries its wheels and the full weight of its load.
Cart Brace96 metalBlacksmithingA bent iron strap bolted across a cart’s corners to hold its bed square under a heavy load.
Cart Spring1112 metalBlacksmithingA stack of curved iron leaves bolted beneath a cart’s bed to soften the jolts of a rutted road.
Makeshift Raft820 wood and 4 clothCarpentryA crude raft of felled trunks lashed together with rope, heavy and inelegant, that rides low but carries a few people at a time across a river with no bridge. It is launched from the bank onto deep water.
Wheel Spoke83 woodFletcheryA stout rod running from a wheel’s hub to its rim, one of many that together bear the load.

The guildmaster#

Ludo Kesh builds siege engines for Mandak’s Legion and carriages for the founding families, and he charges the families twice as much. He learned the trade in the lifts and stairwells of Narsis, which he mentions to nobody in Tharsis, because nobody in Tharsis would forgive him for it. He runs the Engineering Post in the Spire Quarter among its drafting tables and gear bins.

Find Ludo Kesh at the Engineering Post in the Spire Quarter of Tharsis. It’s the guild’s only hall: you join there, and you come back to it for every rank’s quest, inquirer to artisan.

Trades it works with#

Engineering gives the other trades nothing they can’t do without. It takes what they make and builds something bigger.

What it takes from them.

A good pair

Blacksmithing: Most of a wagon or a siege engine is metal parts, and an engineer who forges them waits on nobody.

Who takes it up#

The classes whose work engineering fits best. Any class can join any guild.

The guild finder ranks every guild for a class.

How it shows#

None of this changes a roll. It’s how the people around you can tell what you do for a living.

  • You carry a folding rule and a stub of chalk, and you sketch on any flat surface you find.
  • You know whether a wagon will fit through a gate before you reach it.

What others say#

Kesh's trebuchet put a stone over the wall at Darnam Hill, and the second one went through the same hole.

Everything in Narsis goes up and down on rope and counterweight. The surface calls it primitive. Their stairs are worse.

The carriage that came back

A founding family’s carriage came back from the Mellowdeep causeway without its family, without its driver and without a scratch on it. Ludo Kesh built it, and he says the axle has been swapped for one he didn’t make. Whoever swapped it knew exactly how his carriages are built, and the family wants answers from the man they paid.
